Neti

I hate cold weather and can't wait the arrival of spring.

Unfortunately, the warmer weather has its unwelcome side effect, namely tree pollen!

Like millions of hay fever suffers, I'm really dreading the season of misery and discomfort.

In Japan, most of hay fever sufferers have allergy to cedar and/or cypress pollen.

Come February, just as soon as weather turns a little bit warmer, cedar starts releasing pollens.

This year, the Met Office has already predicted that pollen count would be TEN times higher than the average.

A legacy of the exceptionally hot summer we had last year, apparently.

Ugh...

Unless I were to be miraculously cured of the affliction in the next week or so, I would need to brace myself for the onslaught of the nasty symptoms to come.

It is vital that I do everything I can to lessen my misery.

So what could I do apart from taking the conventional medicines?

Then I remembered about "neti" - a yogic nasal cleansing technique.

Neti is a part of shatkarma or six yogic systems of body cleansing techniques.

These techniques are depicted in Hatha Yoga Pradipika, one of the foremost texts on Hatha Yoga, dating from about the 16th century.

Besides neti, the rest of shatkarma are dhauti (internal cleansing, mainly the cleaning of the digestive tract), basti (yogic enema), trataka (concentrated gazing), nauli (abdominal massaging) and kapalbhati (a breathing technique for frontal brain cleansing).

If you are interested in these cleansing techniques, do read Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

It is quite, eh, riveting to find out how they are done.

Anyway, back to neti, there are two types of nasal cleansing techniques and, here, I'm talking about "jala neti" - nasal cleansing with water.

For this technique, you need a neti pot (I bought mine online).

Fill the pot with lukewarm, slightly salted water, and insert its spout into one nostril.

Tilt your head so that the water flows out the other nostril.

Keep breathing through your mouth during the procedure.

Repeat on the other side, and make sure to dry the nose afterwards by rapid breathing.

You might find that the technique is a bit tricky at first.

But once you get the hang of it, this is a great way to clear nasal passage and very beneficial for hay fever sufferers.

For precaution, if you have any ENT related illnesses, please consult with your doctor before you try the technique.

Fabulous Yarns!

Everyone in the female side of my family is clever with their hands.

My grandmother, for instance, ran popular knitting classes with many students when she was alive.

My mother used to be a dressmaker and she also taught sewing to, again, many students.

My sister is another one who is good at both sewing and knitting.

Then to top it all, my sister-in-law is forever making beautiful handcrafted bags, scarves and such.

And how about me?

Well, sadly, I'm an exception among my talented family.

I can neither sew nor knit well.

However, I seem to have inherited a weeny gene for creativeness as I tend to develop an urge to make something with my hands every now and then.

Many years ago I was hooked by needlework for a while.

I was really into it and made loads of tapestries - some of them were framed and the others were made into cushions.

My interest in this area, however, died down after two years or so.

Next came my papier-mâché period.

Unfortunately it didn't last long, either.

After that, I was into bead crafts and made loads of jewelries for the period of, again, two years or so.

I still make the odd necklace or two when my mood takes me, but it doesn't happen often.

Actually, for a quite long time I'd had no desire to take up anything creative until I saw a gorgeous hand-knitted scarf that was my sister-in-law's creation at the end of last year.

OMG! The yarns she used were just amazing!

She used a combination of three yarns to make out one thicker yarn and they were all different in colours and textures.

These beautiful yarns were from a yarn maker called Avril.

And you know what?

I just had to knit my own scarf using these fabulous yarns!!!

According to my sister-in-law, it took her only two hours to knit the entire scarf and the knitting technique, she said, was very simple.

She even offered to teach me how to knit :)

Well, she is a seasoned knitter whereas I'm a novice...

Still, if the method is simple, even I should be able to knit a scarf, right?

So with huge excitement, I visited Daimaru Department store in Shinsaibashi where Avril yarns were stocked the other day.

AND what waiting for me there was a knitter's paradise - exquisite yarns everywhere that all seemed to be begging us to knit them.

It was hard to choose yarns as they were all incredibly beautiful and there were so many of them.

Anyway, after much deliberation, I picked out four yarns and armed with my purchase, I went home happy bunny.

Eagerly anticipated day for my knitting lesson finally came.

I couldn't quite contain my excitement - in my head, I was an expert knitter already and started to thinking about what I would knit next.

You know, my problem is that I always try to run before I can walk.

Unfortunately, the lesson didn't proceed according to my plan...

I just couldn't get it!!!

I must be a class A idiot!!!

Also a combination of four yarns wasn't easy to handle for a beginner, either.

Do you know what happen to my beautiful yarns?

Well, my sister-in-law took pity in me in the end.

She took them home and knitted a scarf for me - bless her heart!

This will not be the end of my knitting career, though.

I'm still in love with fabulous Avril yarns.

I will master knitting and that is to be my New Year's resolution for 2011!

Watch this space :)

Make Time

Don't you sometimes wish you had more time?

So that you could do the stuff you always wanted to do?

If the answer is yes, you are not the only one.

I often hear people grumble about a lack of time.

Even my 82 years old mother complains how busy she is all the time.

God knows why she is so busy...

A mystery, that is...

Anyway, it seems to me that everyone's life is filled to the brim with whatever they need to do every day.

Studying, working, looking after family, taking care of housework, etc...

"To do list" is a lengthy one.

There're so many things that need to be done and so little time.

"I just don't have time!", you might moan.

But hang on a minute.

Is it really true?

Well, in my case, some of the time I could say I am genuinely busy.

On the other hand, I can't deny that I use lack of time as an excuse, too.

Ultimately, it is up to us to make time, right?

Instead of vegetating in front of the telly or surfing on the net aimlessly like me, unless that is what you really want to do, you can use the time to do, say, read the latest bestseller you've always wanted to read or take up yoga for instance.

The key is to
prioritise your day.

If you review how you normally spend time, most of us should be able to free up an hour or two per week easily.

So instead of wasting time, we have a choice to spend time more effectively and to do the stuff we've always wanted :)

Time waits for no one.

Don't let precious gift of time slip away!

Cheap & Cheerful, and Seriously Cute Bags!

There's a shop I make a habit of visiting every time I return to London.

The place is more like a bazaar than a shop, really.

It's filled from floor to ceiling, bursting with goods from India and its
neighbouring countries.

And what do you think I'm after there?

Well, they sell cute bags that I really adore.

These small bags are nothing fancy.

They are just bits of materials that have been sewn together.

Crudely made, in fact.

But what is so great about these bags?

Well, it is to do with their
colourful material!

I suspect that secondhand saris are used for them.

Also, mix & match way they are put together to make the bags reversible.

In my last trip to London, I ended up buying a few more bags :)

I don't know what to do with my ever expanding collection of them.

Anyone fancy a cheap & cheerful bag?
