DIY Bolsters

I’m a huge advocate for using props.

Props are great inventions for which we should thank Mr BKS Iyengar :)

What is so great about them?

Well, they give you extra inches and support to your body which help you to obtain the correct alignment in yoga asanas.

But above all, they give you “ease” so that you can achieve the correct alignment without straining yourself.

There are many types of props such as belts, blocks, bricks, blankets, sandbags and, my favourite, bolsters.

Unfortunately, these props are not cheap in Japan and their costs are quite often 2 to 3 times higher than in Europe and the States.

I guess once the props gain more popularity in Japan, the prices might come down?

I hope so…

Anyhow, to make at least one of the props affordable, daredemoyoga in collaboration with Murata Bag is offering “DIY Bolsters”!

You might be wondering what they are…

Basically, we are selling a set of bolster covers that consist of one outer cover and one inner cover.

The idea is that you use whatever materials you have at home such as cotton from old futons, rolled up old blankets or towels to stuff in the inner cover to make your own bolster and put it in the outer cover!

Great idea, huh?

If you use any old and unwanted materials lying around at home for the stuffing inside, it’s ecological as well :)

These covers are made of 100% cotton with a full zip that makes stuffing easy work!

As it comes with both inner and outer covers, you can remove and wash the outer cover with ease whenever necessary.

By the way, for the outer cover, you can choose from 3 beautiful colours (purple, royal purple and cassis)!

And best of all, the price for each set is only 3,500 yen plus p & p.

Not bad, huh?

Spiced Hot Chocolate

Another freezing day…

On a cold day like today, my old ambition of moving somewhere warm resurrects itself.

I know Osaka is not that bad, some might say.

The temperature rarely dips below zero and a cold spell doesn’t last for long normally.

Still, the statistic does not reassure us when we are feeling really cold, does it?

I wish I were lying on a tropical beach basking in the sun…

Anyway, to keep myself warm from inside, I’ve been experimenting on winter warming drinks.

My method is very simple :)

I just add warming spices such as ginger, cinnamon, cardamom and cayenne pepper to my favourite hot drink – hot chocolate!

If you use spices in powder form, preparing the drink is very quick and easy.

Just remember not to overpower the drink with spices.

All you need is a tiny pinch of whatever spice you like.

This is what I do when I’m pressed with time:

I warm up soya milk in a pan and add a little ginger powder and instant cocoa to make Ginger Hot Chocolate.

Or instead of ginger, add a little cinnamon power and cayenne pepper to make Aztec Chilli Hot Chocolate.

When I have plenty of time, I make hot chocolate from scratch and, believe me, this tastes miles better!

To make spiced hot chocolate from scratch, this is what I do:

Serve 1

200ml Soya milk (you can use cow’s milk instead)

35g good quality dark chocolate, coarsely grated

A tiny pinch each of cinnamon powder and cardamom powder

A little cayenne pepper and sea salt

Combine all ingredients in a pan over medium heat whisking gently until the chocolate melts completely and the mixture is steaming hot.

Bliss :)
