watch me!

Surya Namaskar A (Short Animation)

One of my nephews, Yutaro, is a musician.

Last autumn, he wrote a lovely piece of music for me to go with my website.

Since then, I’ve wanted to use his music in a special way and come up with an idea to create a short animation of a dogi performing Surya Namaskar A :).

I am pleased to announce that the animation is finally up, thanks to Natsuko’s brilliant art work!

To view the animation, please visit our website and click the button indicated on the top page.

If you like the music, Yutaro has a page on MySpace.

You’ll find more music there as well as information about his upcoming gigs.

Hope you’ll enjoy the animation :)

(Triyoga)

(The Urban Retreat)

(The Path of Grace)

The Path of Grace

I’ve just come back from London after having spent Christmas and the New Year there.

London
is my second home (or first?) and I love so many things about this exciting city.

I especially love its yoga scene, as London is full of fantastic yoga centres.

One such centre, and my favourite, is Triyoga where I used to practice regularly.

I make a point of practicing there as much as I can during my visits to London.

Needless to say, I’ve made several trips to the yoga centre during this visit and enjoyed all the classes I attended tremendously :)

I especially relished an experience I had during the Urban Retreat.

The Urban Retreat is Triyoga’s annual end of the year event and it offers a retreat environment to the participants while still in London.

During the 4 day event, the participants spent from the morning to the evening at the yoga centre immersing themselves with yoga, kirtan and meditation, or simply reflecting on their thoughts and experiences.

Each year, the retreat has a theme and this year’s theme was “The Path of Grace”.

I was lucky to join the retreat for one day, which was unfortunately all my schedule permitted.

During the first part of the retreat on the day I attended, we discussed about “gratefulness”.

The participants, I gathered, were given homework on the previous day to write down a list of what or who made them grateful.

While I was listening to their discussion, I started to compose a list of my own.

First of all, I was grateful to my teachers, Anna and Joey for letting me join the retreat for the day.

I felt grateful for my husband, Bob, for his unwavering support for whatever I decided to do.

I was grateful to my darling Wolfie, a little yorkie, for his loyalty, devotion and love of the purest kind.

I was grateful to my parents for everything they had done for me.

I was grateful to all my teachers for their knowledge, guidance and compassion.

I was grateful to all my students for their loyalty and enthusiasm for yoga.

The list was endless.

When we do an exercise like this, we realise how much we depend on others for who we are and what we do.

Of course, life does not always turn out the way we wish, however if we look around with eyes wide open, there is still plenty to be grateful about :)

As my list went on and on, I was filled with warmth and started feeling really blessed.

Why don’t you try to make your own list?

And take a first step to the path of grace.

Shunyata and Purnata

On New Year’s Eve, I attended an inspiring yoga class.

During the class, the teacher talked about “Shunyata” and “Purnata”.

You might be wondering what they are…

Well, these two Sanskrit words mean “emptiness” and “wholeness” in English.

The words were used repeatedly by the teacher as she guided us through the flowy movement of the class.

In breathing, she urged us to exhale completely to create a state of Shunyata (emptiness), and by doing so we could inhale fully to create a state of Purnata (wholeness).

In attitudes, she urged us to let go of all our experiences of the past year (Shunyata) and here she meant not only bad experiences but also happy ones, in order to welcome new experiences of the New Year (Purnata).

What a fitting message for New Year’s Eve :)

We need to empty out before we can fill in.

It makes sense, doesn’t it?

This can be applied to everything – for instance, I am decluttering my mind of all negativities that I have accumulated over the years.

In time, it will be filled with positive thoughts :)

Yoga Dogs

If you practice yoga, you are well aware that some yoga asanas are derived from animals.

Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Upward Facing Dog Pose) and Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose), for instance, depict some natural movements of dogs when they have a good old stretch.

A question here is that can dogs do yoga asanas apart from the ones they are named after?

Well, let’s look at my darling Wolfie, a yorkie aged 7 and a half.

His repertoires are somewhat limited, I’m afraid…

Apart from the usual suspects, his favourite pose is Savasana (Corpse Pose).

However, it seems that not all dogs are like Wolfie and there are some enlightened dogis around in the world :)

A friend of mine let me know about this amazing calendar called “Yoga Dogs” in which dogis are in picture perfect yoga asanas – thanks to remarkable computer graphics, I must add :)

This calendar is fantastic!

Check out all the brilliant photos above.

If you are a dog lover, no doubt you want to put your hands on the calendar like me.

By the way, for a cat lover, there is “Yoga Cats” calendar, too!

Actually, the cat version looked to me to be more believable, you know…

Perhaps, cats naturally have more grace in their movement than dogs…

I can quite imagine cats practicing yoga behind their master/mistress’s back :)

Ladies Yoga Club

There are three important stages for us women in the life – menstruation, pregnancy and menopause.

Each one of these stages has both positive and negative impacts on our body and mind however insignificant or significant they may be.

I know some lucky women who seem to just breeze through each stage, but most of us are affected by these changes in our life to a degree.

Guess what will ease and help us in each stage?

You no doubt guessed right :)

The answer is yoga!

Some yoga poses are great for easing the discomforts of menstruation.

Also yoga is well known for its positive effects on pregnancy and delivery.

Nowadays pregnancy yoga classes are very popular amongst expectant mothers.

But here, I’d like to focus on the 3rd stage of our life that is to say the menopause.

There are many symptoms for the menopause – some affect the body such as hot flushes, dizziness and lower back aches, and some affect the mind such as mood swings, irritability and depression.

Yoga can, however, help us to cope with them by strengthening the body and relaxing the mind.

We are starting a new Monday morning yoga class, “Ladies Yoga Club”, from January especially for those who are going through the menopause like me.

The class combines both gentle hatha yoga and restorative yoga – hatha yoga to strengthen the joints and muscles, and restorative yoga to relax the body and mind.

The intention of the class also is to offer a supportive environment to ladies affected by the menopause.

Hence the name “Ladies Yoga club” and this won’t be a difficult task since all the participants including the teacher (me) are in the same boat :)

For more information as well as booking your place in the class, please contact daredemoyoga.

The class will commence on Monday, 18th January 2010 at 10:00am – 11:15am.
