Raisin & Walnut Brownie

As I wrote in my last blog, we’ve been giving away homemade cupcakes and brownies to celebrate our 1st anniversary.

My sister bakes these treats and if I may say, they are good :)

Anyway, some people have asked me for the brownie recipe, so here it is.

According to my sister, it’s very easy to make.

Ingredients

180g plain flour

1/3 tsp baking powder

A little salt

3 eggs

20g caster sugar

100g butter

100g brown sugar

100g dark chocolate

50g walnuts

50g raisins

1tbsp rum

Method

Preheat oven to 170
.

Grease a 30 x 20 cm square cake tin and line bottom with baking parchment.

Sift flour, baking powder and salt together into a bowl.

Place walnuts in a plastic bag and break them into pieces using a rolling pin.

Sprinkle a little rum (extra) over raisins and set aside.

Place butter and brown sugar together in a pan over a low heat whisking all the time until it starts bubbling.

Add dark chocolate pieces to the pan and heat further until chocolate melts and all blended well.

Remove from the heat and leave it to cool slightly.

Whisk eggs and sugar together in a large bowl until thick and pale in colour.

Stir in walnuts, raisins, flour and chocolate mixture until blended.

Pour brownie mixture to prepared tin.

Bake for about 30 minutes until a skewer inserted in centre of brownie comes out clean.

Do not overcook!

Brush rum over brownie while hot.

Let it cool in tin completely, then remove and cut into squares.

Now autumn has truly settled here and the temperature starts plummeting, I crave for brownie with steaming mug of soy latte.

It is one of my comfort food :)

When I feel extravagant, I warm up brownie in microwave and serve with a scoop of Haagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream!

Delicious!!!

Happy 1st Anniversary for daredemoyoga!!!

How time flies!

We are celebrating our 1st anniversary this month.

Looking back the last 12 months, I’m filled with immense gratitude and awe…

The concept of daredemoyoga, which began as a tiny seed planted in my mind almost 6 years ago, has sprouted and grown into a young sapling during these months.

This has been only made possible by all my teachers, students, friends and family – without their guidance, dedication, support and love, daredemoyoga would have never happened.

I would like to thank them all from the bottom of my heart and hope they will continue to be there for us as both daredemoyoga and I grow into the future :)

Anyway, in many aspects, I’ve had a truly amazing 12 months.

One of these aspects I especially feel blessed about is that it has given me a great many opportunities to meet people.

I have met so many lovely people since I opened the door to daredemoyoga.

For some, yoga has become a part of their life and witnessing people discover the wonder of yoga has given me tremendous joy.

Through these people, a small yoga community has been created in my part of the world and this community is still growing :)

I feel privileged to be a part of the community and through it I now begin to understand what yoga actually means to me – that yoga does not only unite the body, mind and soul, but more importantly it unites people together.

I have read somewhere if all the people in the world practice yoga, all the conflict will disappear from the world…

It’s so true.

I hope it will be the reality one day.

Anyway, for a proper celebration, you’ve got to have a cake, right?

Thanks to my wonderful sister, we’ve got cakes!

AND thanks to my brilliant friend, Natsuko, we’ve got beautiful message tags to go with them :)

For a limited time only, we are giving away homemade cupcakes and brownies to everyone who attends a class at daredemoyoga.

So, help us to celebrate our 1st anniversary and be a part of our community!

New Look Daredemoyoga

November is upon us.

Can you believe that in two months time, we have to say goodbye to 2009?

The decade is almost over?

It feels like to me only yesterday that everyone was anticipating the new millennium, worrying about the millennium bug and all that…

But life never stands still, does it?

Changes happen all the time.

I have some fab news for you today about one of such changes!

The long awaited renovation work to daredemoyoga has been completed just in time for our 1st anniversary.

The Fate of My Lucky Ring

So this is the concluding part of my lucky ring saga…

As I wrote in the last blog, I was really relieved to hear that the Navaratna ring would bring me luck.

Being quite superstitious (understatement?), I wore the ring religiously every time I went out after that.

There was a tiny weeny problem, though…

The thing was the ring had never been made smaller to fit my finger properly.

You might be wondering why I didn’t take it down to a jewellery shop to do the work.

Well, I did ask a jeweller in London, however, it couldn’t be done due to the way nine gems were set.

Ugh…

Anyhow, the blasted ring frequently slipped away from my finger as it was oversized.

It fell in all sorts of places…

But whenever it did slip away, I realised its absence immediately. (Perhaps, something to do with my strong attachment to the ring?)

Also the ring was always found either nestled inside of my handbag or yoga mat bag or sometimes on the floor until the day before my final exam for yoga teacher training course…

On the doomed day, I popped into a branch of M & S to pick up some lunch on the way to my work.

I was running late, so I hurried through the checkout and started walking towards my office.

Then half way there, I suddenly realised my ring was missing!!!

Ohmygod!!!

I thought I dropped it at the checkout when I paid for my lunch, so I rushed back to the shop.

You can imagine that I was in a state of panic and very distressed!

The ring was supposed to be my lucky charm and I was desperate for good luck for my exam on the following day.

AND I admit I am awfully superstitious!!!

Anyway, I frantically looked for the ring everywhere in the shop – I retraced my footsteps and asked a shop assistant just off chance someone handed it in.

Unfortunately, the ring was found nowhere….

It seemed to have disappeared into thin air – lost forever…

I felt then with the ring my luck was gone, gone, GONE!!!

That night, my long suffering husband had to listen to me lamenting about how I was doomed and it would be inevitable that I would fail in my exam, blah, blah, blah…

I was such a drama queen.

Somehow, I pulled myself together in the end and scraped through my exam.

Needless to say I was elated to receive the longed for teaching qualification.

Anyway, the whole thing happened over two and half years ago and I didn’t think about it much until recently…

This story came up during a conversation, and a wise lady whom I was having the conversation with gave me words of wisdom.

She said probably the ring disappeared as it had completed its purpose.

In hindsight, it is so true…

The ring was the epitome of my dream – to be a yoga teacher.

I first started dreaming about being a yoga teacher about 6 years ago in India around the time I found the ring.

Because of the series of unfortunate incidents evolved around the ring (please refer to my last blog!), I went to see a Vedic astrologer.

Then through my astrological chart, I found that teaching would be my vocation and this cemented my intention to be a yoga teacher.

Back in London, all through my 18 month long yoga teacher training course, the ring was always on my finger as a kind of talisman.

And when the first stage of my dream was completed, it disappeared…

The ring had brought me more than luck after all.
