Navaratna – Lucky or Unlucky Ring?

This one is sort of in a similar vain to my last blog and it is about a gem stone ring with supernatural (?) power.

About 6 years ago, I found a very unusual ring at a jewellery shop in India and fell in love with it.

Needless to say, I bought the ring without hesitation.

This sterling silver ring was square shaped and set with nine gem stones.

This type of ring is called “Navaratna” ring and it means nine gems in Sanskrit.

Each gem symbolises one of nine” planets” and the setting of the gems are traditionally arranged as follows;-

Ruby which symbolises the Sun is always in the centre.

Diamond which symbolises Venus is set directly above ruby.

From there in a clockwise direction, pearl for the Moon, coral for Mars, hessonite for Rahu (the ascending node of the Moon or Dragon’s Head), blue sapphire for Saturn, cat’s eye for Ketu (the descending node of the Moon or Dragon’s Tail), yellow sapphire for Jupiter and finally, emerald for Mercury, and they are all surrounding ruby.

“Navaratna” has a strong association with the “Navagraha” or “nine influencers (planets) of human destiny “in Vedic Astrology.

These nine so called influencers (planets) are one and the same planets symbolised by nine gems.

By the way, the term “planet” used in Vedic Astrology is somewhat forced as they include the Sun & the Moon as well as two imaginary points of orbits of the Earth and the Moon – Rahu and Ketu.

Anyway, according to the astrology, the placement of the Navagraha in one’s horoscope allegedly has an influence throughout an individual’s life.

Wearing the nine gems is said to provide an astrological balance and benefit to the wearer.

Vedic Astrologer, however, says that these gems potentially may have either positive or negative influences on human life.

I can vouch for the validity of this saying as the gems have indeed influenced someone I know…

Well, as I wrote in the beginning, I purchased a “Navaratna” ring in India about 6 years ago.

Unfortunately, the ring was much too big for me and it didn’t fit any of my fingers.

My ex-landlady’s daughter, a lovely Indian girl, knew a jeweller and kindly offered to take the ring there to make it smaller.

A few days later, she returned the ring to me without any alteration done.

I noticed that something was wrong straight away.

She was in a state - looked extremely upset and agitated.

Anyway, she started blubbering how misfortune after misfortune fell on her because of the ring!

She said that after I left the ring with her, she put it on her finger.

Her unexplainable “accidents” started happening almost immediately…

During the night, she woke up thirsty.

Without bothering to switch on the light, she padded down bare feet to the kitchen to get a glass of water.

What happened to her then was that she treaded on a glass that shouldn’t have been left on the floor.

Poor girl had her foot injured by the broken glass.

The following day, while she was driving, suddenly a person materialised in front of her car crossing the road.

The accident was avoided, but she said she almost ran over someone!

The near accident upset her immensely so that she decided to go home instead of continuing to her destination.

And the final nail in the coffin was that on her return home, she ended up driving into the garage door while she was parking her car.

Three unlucky incidents…

Could they be just coincidence???

Anyway, she was adamant that the ring was unlucky and didn’t want anything to do with it.

As you can imagine, the series of misfortune that had befallen her really spooked me.

The ring might have been cursed or something!

I ended up consulting with a Vedic Astrologer, and it turned out that the ring was in fact unlucky for this Indian girl.

However, to my relief, I was assured that it wouldn’t have any adverse effect on me or rather it would bring me luck :)

Phew!!!

So what do you think has happened to the ring?

Well, this is another story…

It will be continued to my next blog!

Healing Stones

Do you believe in fate?

Have you ever had an experience that could not be quite explained by the mere word “coincidence”?

Well, I’ve had a fascinating experience recently and it happened like this…

During my restorative yoga class, I noticed that a student was wearing a beautiful bracelet made of crystals and other healing stones.

I was sort of drawn to the bracelet and made a mental note that I would ask the student where she got it from after the class.

But, before I even mentioned about the bracelet, she started talking about it herself!

She told me that she finally found something she loved to wear and how the combination of the healing stones came about.

To cut a long story short, everything about the bracelet was meant to be.

Anyhow, during the conversation, I felt this strong yearning for my own bracelet.

You’ve got to understand that before I spotted the bracelet, I had never even thought about getting one for myself.

A bracelet was definitely NOT on my wish list.

I couldn’t quite comprehend this compulsion, nevertheless I felt I had to have one.

Thus, I got the details of the shop where the bracelet was purchased and visited there myself.

This story did not end there.

When I visited the healing goods shop, “You no Sato” in Nishinakajima Minamikata, I was offered a chance to have a go at its 3rd anniversary instant prize draw.

AND guess what I won?

A beautiful bracelet made of crystal, sunstone, lapis lazuli and kyanite!!!

Was it a coincidence or written in the stars?

Anyway, I had a stone reading session to find out three healing stones that were right for me, and incredibly, kyanite that formed the part of the bracelet was one of three stones!

I decided to add citrines to the combination as it was another one of these stones, and voila!

I’m now a proud owner of a beautiful healing stone bracelet :)

It will purify the environment and dispel negativity (crystal), connect me to higher self (lapis lazuli), help me to quiet the mind and bring about the balance (kyanite), give me the positive energy and vitality (sunstone), and help me to develop self worth and master the ego (citrine).

Wow!

The best combination of the healing powers for an aspiring yogi, don’t you think?

This bracelet will be my constant companion throughout my long yogic journey :)

Raw Food

Being a yoga teacher, I follow a reasonably healthy diet.

I mainly adhere to vegetarian diet, bar occasional fish appearing on my menu. (I can’t quite give up sushi and sashimi…)

I know my diet sounds VERY healthy, but my vices are coffee and sweets of every kind…

Oh, and I’m quite partial to junk food such as chips, too…

Anyway, I have an interest in healthy diet as well as an intention, at least, of sticking to it, albeit frequent slip ups...

The other day, I attended a Raw Food Workshop run by the head chef of the famous Purple Valley Yoga Retreat in Goa, India.

The said chef, Sayuri, a lovely Japanese lady, was visiting Osaka and I was lucky enough to attend one of her workshops there.

You might wonder what “raw food” is.

Well, in a nutshell, raw food or sometimes it is called “living food” is uncooked vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and sprouted grains.

Virtually everything edible that grows from the earth that has not been cooked.

Along side other healthy diets, I have always had an interest in raw food.

In fact, I have sampled the ware once before in London and, well, I wasn’t impressed by the taste then to be honest.

It was very bland and despite all the benefits of raw food such as its nutrient values (digestive enzymes, antioxidants, etc) being higher than cooked food, etc, the experience didn’t convert me into a raw food enthusiast.

Anyhow, as I wanted to give another shot at raw food, I attended the workshop and voila!

It converted me!

The workshop, “Sweets and Breakfast for Chocoholics” was absolutely amazing!!!!

The food was utterly delicious and I couldn’t quite believe how good they were.

Especially, very easy to make Raw Chocolate as well as to die for Mint and Chocolate Marble Cheese Cake were out of this world!

AND the icing on the cake is that they are actually good for you – guilt free sweets, in fact :)

Can you believe it!?

It shows the taste of food is dependent on the chef and how it’s prepared.

No doubt, Sayuri is a brilliant chef!

Guess what?

I’m hunting for a good food processor right now.

I’ll definitely shift my diet towards raw food.

Well, you are what you eat after all :)

Restorative Yoga Workshop

September has gone so quickly!

I don’t know where to it has disappeared…

Ohmigod!!!

I just
realised that I haven’t updated my blog for over a month…

Bad form, huh?

Anyway, I would like to make a little announcement today about upcoming Restorative Yoga Workshops at daredemo yoga.

A series of workshops aimed at exploring restorative yoga are planned on the 3rd Sunday of each month starting from 18 October 2009.

As I have written in my previous blog, restorative yoga is still a pretty new concept in Japan.

In recent years, the popularity of yoga has been well established here, and nowadays, many yoga classes are offered everywhere.

These classes tend to focus on building flexibility and strength in the body, and this is fantastic if they are what your body and mind need.

But sometimes your body and mind get depleted by accumulated stress and fatigue so that what they really need is
“nurturing” – restoring equanimity to the mind and returning vitality to the body.

Restorative yoga does those and more.

These workshops offer the participants opportunities to experience restorative yoga’s positive effects to both body and mind firsthand and to learn how to use numerous props to set up each pose.

The first workshop that is to be held on Sunday, 18 October 2009 is now sold out.

Two more workshops are scheduled for 2009 on the following dates.

Sunday, 15 November 2009 14:00 - 16:00pm

Sunday, 13 December 2009 14:00 - 16:00pm (Please note that for December 2009 only, the workshop will be held on the 2nd Sunday of the month.)

Due to the limited space and props, only 4 places available for each workshop, so if you are interested, please book early!

These workshops are suitable for beginners, however some experience in yoga is preferable.

Hope to see you on the mat :)
