Figs

I have a fig tree in my garden.

This tree has been planted by the previous tenants of the house I now live in.

If you are a follower of my blog, you might remember reading about asparagus growing in my garden.

Just like asparagus, I’m benefiting from someone else’s endeavors as well as the power of nature.

This tree is thriving and full of fruits.

Figs are one of my most
favourite fruits.

So you can imagine that getting a free supply of figs is absolutely fantastic!

Lucky me :)

Do you know a fig fruit is actually the flower of the tree?

I didn’t know until now.

In fact, I was curious what sort of flower the tree would produce.

But instead of the flowers, I noticed the little green
coloured nubs started appearing on the branches of the tree one day and they grew into fruits.

Now I know why the word “fig” in kanji (Chinese characters we use in Japan) literally means “a fruit without flower”.

Interesting, huh?

Anyway, I plucked a ripe fig from the tree this morning and it was utterly delicious!

Most of the fruits are not ripe enough at the moment, but they will be soon!

Can’t wait :)

Cool Dips

My dad grows vegetables in his allotments and garden.

At the moment, the summer vegetables such as cucumber,
aubergine, okra, pepper and tomato are abundant.

These vegetables are versatile and you can eat them in loads of different ways.

But now the heat and humidity of summer is so intense, what I crave is something cooling like homemade dips!

They are fantastic for dipping raw vegetable sticks such as celery and carrots.

Also spread over crackers and crispy breads will make a yummy snack.

Excellent accompaniment for BBQ, too!

So here are two great recipes you can try.

They are Greek, by the way :)

Tzatziki

1 small or 1/2 large fresh cucumber

1-2 fresh garlic cloves, crushed

Little sea salt

300g Greek-style yoghurt

2 tsp white wine vinegar

To prepare, peel the cucumber and then grate it on a medium-coarse grater.

Wrapping it in a clean tea towel and squeeze out as much moisture from the cucumber as possible.

Place the cucumber in a bowl, add the crushed garlic, salt, yoghurt and wine vinegar and mix well.

Serve chilled.

Baba Ganoush

675g
aubergines

1tsp freshly ground cumin seed

1-2 garlic cloves, crushed

1tbsp light tahini (sesame seed paste) or substitute with “neri goma”

2tsp olive oil

Juice of 1/2 lemon

1tsp sea salt

Freshly ground black pepper

To prepare, preheat the oven to 200
or the grill to hot.

Prick the
aubergines and bake them for 40 minutes or until soft right through or alternatively put them under the hot grill turning frequently.

Allow them to cool a little, then halve them and scoop their flesh if baked or peel the skin if grilled.

Put them into a blender or food processor and add the remaining ingredients and blend until you have a puree.

Serve chilled.
