Colours
of India

In my opinion, the visual sense is the most important of all five senses.

There are many factors which affect our visual sense such as shapes and textures.

Among these,
“colours have the strongest impact to my senses.

Each
colour symbolises something for me.

For instance, “blue”
symbolises the clear sky and the deep oceans.

It also represents coolness and serenity.

Colour
“green”, on the other hand, symbolises the forest and the rolling hills of England.

In this fashion, when I think of
colours, the associated visual image will automatically pop up in my mind.

For me, each country has
colours that epitomise the country.

Green, grey and blue are the
colours for England – green of the grasses, the grey sky of semi-perpetual winter and the blue of the sky in the rare occasion that the sun decides to show up.

Pale pink, blue, red & yellow and white are the
colours for Japan – pale pink of the cherry blossoms, blue of the summer sky, red & yellow of the autumn leaves and white of the winter snow.

And which
colours do you think represent India?

The answer is “multi
-colours” – red, green, blue pink, purple, orange and any other vibrant colours that exist in the world!

If you ever experience “Holi” in India, you will understand what I mean.

“Holi” or the “Festival of
Colours” is a popular Hindu festival held in spring.

It is celebrated by people throwing
coloured powder and coloured water at each other.

Can be very messy business :)

There are several legends connected with Holi.

Its origin, however, was believed to lie with mischievous
Krishna who threw coloured water over the gopis (milkmaids), and this developed into the practical jokes and games of Holi.

Your clothes will be certainly ruined and you might sport
colourful marks on your face for a few days.

But all is done with good nature and I’ll guarantee you it is great fun!

Asparagus

Asparagus is one of my most favourite vegetables.

They are in season now and readily available at green grocers and supermarkets everywhere.

In my case, I don’t need to visit shops as I have asparagus growing in my garden!

They are organic to boot!

And the best of all, I didn’t plant them, but the previous tenant did.

Lucky me :)

Did you know asparagus shoots up from the ground like bamboo does year after year?

I didn’t know this until I found them in my garden.

If you let them, they will grow pretty tall, easily over a
metre.

Then they are unfortunately too tough to eat.

Anyway, fresh asparagus is so tender and sweet!

No need to cook them.

Well, the truth is that I had no interest whatsoever in growing vegetables until now.

But after tasting my own asparagus, it has made me
realise how wonderful to grow my own vegs.

There are many factors attest this.

First of all, you know the vegs are completely free of pesticides.

Secondly, they taste nothing like the stuff you buy from shops – they taste infinitely sweeter.

Thirdly, it makes you feel grateful for nature’s bounty and appreciate all the hard work
that farmers accomplish
.

Although growing your own vegs requires time, care and attention, it is worth the effort as the end result is so satisfying :)

At the moment, I’m growing cherry tomatoes and some herbs as they are relatively easy to look after – I’m a novice in this after all.

I can’t wait to sample my own tomatoes in the coming months :)

Even if you don’t have a garden, you can still grow some vegs in a planter.

So why don’t you try to grow your own?

Especially if you’ve got kids, show them food does not come from supermarkets!

It is very rewarding and educational :)

The Full Moon Meditation

I’ve always thought that the Moon has some sort of mystical powers.

I’m not personally affected by its cycle of waning and waxing much, however, people of a certain star sign, namely Cancerians, are definitely influenced by it.

I’m sure this phenomenon can be explained by the fact that the Cancerian’s ruling planet is nothing other than the Moon.

Some Cancerians are full of energy which borders to hyper around the time of the full moon and lethargic at the time of the new moon.

This could be just a coincidence.

However, based on my observation and experience, this seems to be the case.

My husband is a Cancerian, you see :)

Anyhow, I guess regardless of your star sign, like all things of a watery nature (human beings are about 70% water), most of us are more or less affected by the lunar cycle.

This is why practitioners of Ashtanga Yoga traditionally do not practice on the moon days – the days fall on the full moon and the new moon.

The phases of the moon are believed to create different energetic experiences.

The full moon energy is an expansive, upward moving force that makes us feel energetic and emotional, but not well grounded.

On the other hand, the new moon energy is a contracting, downward moving force that makes us feel calm and grounded, but dense and disinclined towards physical exertion.

Talking about the lunar cycle, the day after tomorrow, 9th May is the full moon.

My yogi friend has taught me an interesting meditation which is done on the full moon day.

Basically, on the full moon day, you find a quiet place where you can see the moon.

Sit in meditation for however long you feel like meditating, at least 15 – 20 minutes.

Then, find a pen and paper and write down 7 of your wishes on the paper.

It does not have to be in any particular order.

Once it’s done, go back to meditation for a further 15 – 20 minutes and this time you focus on each wish in your mind.

Your 7 wishes will be somehow
realised some day.

My friend swears it works.

But be warned!

If your wish is winning a lottery, it won’t work.

This technique is to plant a positive seed in your mind.

So your wishes need to be realistic.

I haven’t tried this meditation yet, but I’ll be definitely doing it the day after tomorrow!

Happy Moon Day!
