Banana, Coconut and Chocolate Lassi

One of my most favourite drinks is “lassi”.

Lassi is a drink made from curd (yoghurt) and water blended together and you can have it salty, spicy or sweet.

Fruits such as mango and banana can be blended with yoghurt and water to make it fruity, too.

Lassi is very popular in India where it originates from.

It is served chilled and perfect for hot weather!

There are many restaurants and cafes in Mysore, India where you can enjoy delicious and, the most importantly, safe (to drink) lassis.

Among these places, “Three Sisters” serves, in my opinion, by far the best lassis in town.

The place is called “Three Sisters” simply as it is run by three lovely local sisters in Lakshmipuram area of Mysore.

Basically, they open up their house to yoga students for healthy and nutritious meals as well as terrific massages.

The place offers lassis in many different
flavours and they are all utterly delicious.

BUT the lassi to die for is…

Banana, coconut and chocolate lassi!

All the ingredients are
whizzed up in a blender with loads of ice, so the end result is a frozen style lassi – you can eat it with a spoon!

Believe me, it is pure heaven :)

You’ve got to try it if you ever visit Mysore.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the exact recipe for it, but I can create near enough lassi with the following ingredients and method.

Banana, Coconut and Chocolate Lassi (Serve One)

1-2 bananas

25g good quality dark chocolate

1-2 tbsp desiccated coconut (use fresh coconut, if you can)

100g plain yoghurt

ice cubes (10 -15 cubes at least)

Place all the ingredients in a blender and simply whiz them up until smooth.

Enjoy!!!

The Easter Eggs and Bunnies

This weekend is Easter holiday in the UK along with many other Christian countries around the world.

Easter is an important annual festival for Christians to celebrate Christ’s resurrection from his death three days after his crucifixion.

In the UK, it is, however, eagerly anticipated by not only Christians, but also non Christians alike as a part of tradition and a signal for the beginning of spring.

The tradition of exchanging and eating the Easter eggs and bunnies both made of chocolate is especially popular there.

Soon after New Year, you would notice chocolate Easter eggs start appearing in supermarkets’ shelves.

Towards the actual holiday, you would find the eggs and bunnies wrapped in
colourful foils and beautifully decorated at shops everywhere and the sale of chocolates shoots up, well, just like St Valentine’s Day in Japan.

But don’t you wonder why eggs and bunnies?

Well, eggs are a symbol of spring and new life after all.

The Easter eggs are a very old tradition started well before Christianity.

Before they were replaced by chocolate Easter eggs, real eggs were used, usually chicken eggs.

They were hard-boiled and dyed in bright
colours that represent spring and light.

And bunnies?

Rabbits, due to their fecund nature, have always been a symbol of fertility.

The Easter bunny (rabbit), however, may actually be an Easter hare.

According to an Anglo-Saxon legend, the Saxon goddess Eostre found a wounded bird and transformed it into a hare, so that it could survive the winter.

The hare found it could lay eggs, so it decorated these each spring and left them as offering to the goddess.

In the UK, children believe that if they are good, the Easter bunny will leave (chocolate) eggs for them.

These eggs are said to be hidden about the home or garden by
the Easter bunny.

By the way,
Easter occurs at a different time each year – Easter Day falls on the first Sunday after the full moon day on or after the vernal equinox.

This year, Easter Day is today, 12th April and the holiday and celebration actually started from Good Friday which was 10th April and ends on 13th April, Easter Monday.

Well, I’m not into religion, but do enjoy eating the Easter eggs and bunnies :)

Happy Easter!

Metta Meditation

Apart from teaching yoga, I occasionally act as an interpreter for yoga workshops.

The other day, I interpreted a wonderful workshop taught by my friend and fellow yoga teacher at a yoga studio in Osaka.

The workshop was about awakening spines using a proper breathing technique and bandhas.

It was well received by the students and no doubt they were truly inspired judging by everyone’s reactions and feedback at the end of the workshop :)

The workshop was concluded by Metta Meditation and about this meditation I would like to write today.

“Metta” means loving kindness in “Pali” which is the language of the earliest existing Buddhist scriptures.

In this form of meditation, the practitioners develop a deep and unconditional love for themselves and all living being in this world regardless of race, religion, social class and even the boundaries of humanity.

By reciting the specific words and phrases repetitively, they evoke the boundless warm-hearted feeling – friendship, non violence and a strong wish for happiness and well-being of others.

So how do we do this?

In Metta practice, we offer up universal wishes – to live happily and to be free from hostility, affliction, and distress.

Traditionally, we begin by offering these to ourselves, then to any or all of the following categories of people - our loved ones, family, friends, colleagues and people associated with us in any form.

Each time we recite the offerings, we picture an image of the person we are offering the wishes.

And finally, we offer the wishes to all living beings of this world.

So we begin like this;

May I be safe and protected.

May I be peaceful and happy.

May I be healthy and strong.

May I have ease of well being (and accept all the conditions of the world).

Then,

May he/she be safe and protected.

May he/she be peaceful and happy.

May he/she be healthy and strong.

May he/she have ease of well being (and accept all the conditions of the world).

Finally,

May all living beings be safe and protected.

May they be peaceful and happy.

May they be healthy and strong.

May they have ease of well being (and accept all the conditions of the world).

We can do this any time of the day and any length of time.

We can do this sitting in meditation or walking (preferably without a particular destination).

First time I tried this meditation during the aforesaid workshop, I was filled with such love and happiness.

I felt the warmth and tingling sensation spreading from my heart and reaching everywhere.

Then I was at peace with myself.

Hope you will try this and find peace from within.
