Different Types of “Vegetarian”

Do you know there are several types of vegetarian exist?

Some vegetarians do eat eggs.

Some so called vegetarians even eat fish!

According to the Food Bible by Judith Wills (published by Quadrille Publishing in London), Demi-vegetarian will, apparently, eat everything except red meat.

Sometimes poultry is also excluded, but fish is included, though may be eaten only infrequently.

Lacto-ovo-vegetarian will eat all dairy produce and eggs, but no flesh of any kind.

Whereas Lacto-vegetarian will eat all dairy produce, but no eggs or flesh of any kind.

Vegans, however, eat only plant foods - no dairy produce of any kind, or eggs, or anything from an animal, including honey.

The next lot is called Fruitarian who eats only fruits (at least 75% of diet), uncooked vegetables (mostly leafy kinds), raw nuts, seeds and beansprouts.

If you think Fruitarian sounds weird, then Sproutarian sounds outright crazy!

Sproutarian eats mostly sprouted seeds, grains, pulses and rice.

I’m sorry for those who follow the diet, but it doesn’t sound
at all appetising

The last two diets are not recommended by qualified nutritionists, as they will not meet full nutrient quota to maintain a healthy body.

Anyway, let’s get back to a subject of “vegetarian” and fish.

I remember a really funny incident that I witnessed at a Chinese restaurant in London a few years back.

It happened at a lunch time buffet.

I had stopped eating meat by then, but there were plenty to eat for me since there were loads of mouth watering vegetable dishes on the trestles alongside meat, rice and noodle dishes.

The choice of seafood was limited, however, to one dish - steamed prawn dumpling.

The said dumpling was clearly everyone’s
favourite, as every time freshly steamed dumplings arrived on the trestle, everyone pounced on them.

There was a lady who pounced on the dumplings as soon as they arrived and scooped up the entire dumplings onto her plate while everyone looked at her with horrified amazement.

One of the waiters saw the incident and asked her to be considerate to others and return some of the dumplings back to the serving dish.

The lady was very affronted and told him that “well, I’m a vegetarian and this is the only dish I can eat here!”

I couldn’t help looking at many vegetable dishes within her reach…

Vegetarian, huh?

Vegetarian, beware!

Today is the 12th day of my pledge to eat veg 30 day challenge and I’m pleased to report that so far so good.

I haven’t missed fish and seafood as much as I anticipated.

A problem, however, is that it is quite tricky to avoid fish products altogether in Japan.

Unsuspecting vegetarians, beware!

Even innocent looking miso soup quite often contains fish in its stock.

You see, it is very common to use a combination of konbu (seaweed) and katsuo (bonito flake) stock for miso soup and any other soupy food and broth here.

Another frequent difficulty a vegetarian faces in Japan is that most of the restaurants and food manufacturers are not really vegetarian friendly.

In England, most of food products and restaurant menus that are suitable for vegetarian are clearly indicated.

It makes our life so much easier, since all we need to look out for is a “suitable for vegetarian” sign, that’s all!

Japan
, however, is a potential vegetarian nightmare.

You’ve got to check ingredients for everything you purchase, and it is a fact that most of the food stuffs contain either fish or meat products here.

Eating out puts you in another predicament, unless you eat in a vegetarian restaurant.

I was surprised to find, the other day, that chicken stock was commonly used for seemingly vegetarian menu such as vegetable curry!

Every time I eat out, I ask a waiter whether my choice of dish doesn’t contain meat or meat products, and the waiter, in turn, always needs to check with the kitchen stuff.

What a hassle!

During this challenge, I have to ask about not only meat but also fish products as well!

I’m better off sticking to my own cooking for now…

Anyway, as I said, I’m quite ok with not eating fish and seafood, but the truth be told, I do miss eggs!

I don’t normally eat eggs much, but I do enjoy an occasional omelette and French toast.

Unfortunately, most of the confectionaries like cakes and biscuits contain eggs as well.

I’m a confirmed case of a sweet addict, if such thing exists…

Needless to say, giving up eggs is quite hard-going for me.

Well, at least, I can still eat chocolate…

Not a bad consolation, I guess :)

Safe Practice

While each yoga pose has many physical as well as mental benefits, at the same time, depending on your physical conditions and ailments, certain poses should be avoided or at least they should be practiced with caution.

For instance, ladies, avoid inversions and any poses that focus on abdomen during menstruation.

Extreme backbends are also not recommended, as they tend to aggravate lower back pains associated with menstruation.

Instead of these poses, seated forward bends such as Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend), Janu Sirsasana (Head to Knee Pose), Triang Mukhaikapada Paschimottanasana (One Foot Transversely Facing Back Forward Bend) and Upavista Konasana (Wide Angle Seated Forward Bend) are good ones to practice, especially if you support your abdomen with a bolster or a rolled up blanket.

These supported forward bends soften the abdomen as well as gently stretching the lower back.

They help to relieve discomfort from these areas and calm the mind.

Supported Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose) is another great pose to practice, as it relaxes the abdomen and lower back.

It also relieves cramps and
quietens the mind.

For those who suffer from high blood pressure, inversions should definitely be avoided.

Try to practice forward bends which have calming effects to the mind and help to lower the blood pressure, instead.

Also, simple Pranayama (breathing exercise) such as Nadi Sodhana (alternative nostril breathing) is ideal as this is considered to be the best technique to calm the mind and the nervous system.

When standing poses such as Trikonasana (Triangle Pose) and Parsva Konasana (Lateral Angle Pose) are practiced, be sure that you keep your top arm on the waist instead of stretching up towards the ceiling and keep your dristi down instead of up.

If you suffer from serious eye problems such as glaucoma, once again, inversions should be avoided.

For pregnant ladies, deep twist such as Ardha Matsyendrasana (Sage Matsyendra's Pose), poses which focus on abdomen such as Navasana (Boat Pose), poses which require you to lie flat on the belly such as Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), any poses which require you to lie flat on the back and inversions are all avoided or use modifications.

Also, remember that yoga practice is not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy.

If you have any physical conditions or serious health problems, speak to your doctor before you take up yoga.

Most of all use common sense and if you feel any undue discomforts during the practice, listen to what your body tells you and just back off a bit.

Be sure to inform your yoga teacher of your health concern before the class.

Safe practice!

PETA
が参加者一人一人につきFruit Tree Planting Foundation(フルーツ・トリー・プランティング・ファンデーション)に寄付することを約束しているのです。

Join the Pledge to Eat Veg 30 Day Challenge!

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the largest animal rights organisation in the world, has teamed up with the Experience Project, again the largest website for sharing life experiences, to challenge us to give up eating meat for 30 days this January.

By joining this challenge, you’ll be helping to protect the rights of animals as well as the environment, and at the same time you can make your eating habit healthier.

But the incentive to join the challenge is not only these.

PETA has promised to make a donation to the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation for every one who signs up to the challenge!

The Foundation’s goal is to plant 18 billion fruit trees worldwide, approximately three trees for every human being.

The trees will not only provide fruits for hungry people in the deprived area of the world, but also they will help the environment.

Well, I don’t eat meat, but I do eat fish and egg normally.

I’m, however, willing to give up fish and egg, even sushi - my
most favourite food, and stick to veg for 30 days.

My contribution itself might be small, but if everyone can join this challenge, it will help to change the world :)

Actually, I’m quite lucky living in Japan – plenty of tasty tofu products are readily available everywhere!

So, what will I be eating for the next 30 days?

Well, broiled tofu with veg, stir fried tofu with veg, deep fried tofu and, oh yes, I can’t miss out tofu cheesecake!

Hope you can join the challenge, too.

You can join the challenge from the site below.

Mamma Mia!

There are loads of great films due to open this month in Japan.

I can’t wait to see the new 007 film.

Two parts Che Guevara films look great, too!

But the film I’ve been looking forward so much since its opening in the UK last August is “Mamma Mia!”.

As you probably know, it is a musical based on the songs of ABBA.

I saw a theatre production of “Mamma Mia!” in London many years ago.

It was a great show and when I found out about its film version was being made, I just couldn’t wait for the opening of the film :)

The film has become a massive worldwide hit since its opening last year.

And I think it will be the same here once it opens on 30th January.

Well, I have a confession to make…

I couldn’t wait until 30th January, so I obtained a DVD from the UK and have already watched the film, well, several times!

The film didn’t disappoint me one bit and it is absolutely fantastic!!!

These actors and actresses can all sing and dance!

Especially, Meryl Streep – she is a truly great actress and it looks like there’s nothing she cannot do…

Anyway, if you want to blow the winter blues away, this is the film to see.

I’ll guarantee that you’ll have the time of your life :)

And if you are like me, you can’t help singing along to the great ABBA numbers at the top of your voice.

Enjoy the film!!!
