Afternoon Tea

I guess you have heard of “Afternoon Tea” before.

If you have visited England, you might have indulged in posh Afternoon Tea at the Ritz or Brown’s

Some venues offer its original menu such as “Chocolate Afternoon Tea” at the Ritz, however traditionally Afternoon Tea consists of various finger sandwiches such as the mandatory cucumber, and smoked salmon sandwich.

It also includes a variety of pastries, biscuits and cakes.

A wide selection of teas are normally offered and from which you can choose your
favourite.

AND most importantly (?) it is always served with scones!

In my opinion, nothing tastes better than still warm scones heaped with Devonshire clotted cream and strawberry preserve.

Triple yum!

Sipping fragrant tea served in a bone china tea cup, as you sample delicious scones, delicate pastries and finger sandwiches…

Surrounded by the gorgeous décor of super luxurious hotel, partaking Afternoon Tea while listening to live piano music or string quartet is a wonderful experience.

You are bound to feel like transported to some other world, totally cut off from your everyday life. (Unless you are super rich, of course... if you are, then this is the norm, I guess…)

A venue like that normally has a strict dress code that requires a jacket and tie for gents and no jeans are permitted.

It is a great opportunity for us, girls, to dress up, though :)

The drawbacks for this beautiful ritual, however, are you need to make a reservation 6 weeks in advance at some venues and it is not cheap!

The traditional Afternoon Tea will cost you about £35 onwards that is roughly 7,000 yen per person!

It is beyond the means of ordinary folks and, unless you are super rich, you can only indulge in the experience for special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries.

Having said that normally loads of food, sometimes more than you can consume, is served with tea.

So you can have Afternoon Tea instead of lunch or supper, then it might not sound that expensive.

If you think Afternoon Tea sounds too posh for your liking, how about “Cream Tea” instead?

Cream Tea comes with tea and scones, clotted cream and strawberry preserve.

Clotted cream is a must!

It is traditionally made in Devonshire and tastes like something between butter and cream.

It is quite rich, but utterly delicious!

If you travel to Southwest of England, counties like Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, you will notice the sign for “Cream Tea” everywhere.

Homemade scones served at simple local cafes in theses areas are out of this world!

There is a small village called Lulworth in Dorset which is famous for its cove, beautiful horseshoe shaped
harbour.

I just loved scones served at a small café by the Cove and every time we visited the area, we always treated ourselves with Cream Tea there.

Speculating how fattening scones heaped with clotted cream and a huge drop of strawberry preserve are (each contains possibly 800 calories!?), I still gobbled down at least two, sometimes more!

Ahhhh… writing about scones makes me salivate…

Drat! I have developed a serious craving for scones now.

Got to find clotted cream first, though!

Yum!

Porridge

Once again, it was absolutely freezing this morning.

When I woke up, my bedroom was like the inside of a fridge. Ugh…

It was such a struggle for me to get out of bed. (I was debating for at least 10 minutes whether I should skip my daily yoga practice and stay in bed instead...)

On the days like this, I do miss central heating which I took it for granted in London.

For those who don’t know what central heating is, it provides warmth to the whole interior of a building from one point to multiple rooms.

It is very popular in Europe and North America.

The best thing about the heating system is that everywhere in the house is equally warm, including bathroom, loo, corridor, and the entrance area where we normally don’t have any heating in Japan.

Also, if you set the timer before you go to bed, when you wake up in the morning, the entire house is warm!

Thus there’s no need to struggle to get out of bed. (Well, not from the cold at least…)

It’s like heaven!

Not like hell (mind you, it’s the freezing kind and not the boiling one…), I now face every morning…

Anyhow, being this cold, I don’t feel like eating muesli and cereals for breakfast any longer.

So it is time to say good-bye to cereals and say hello to “porridge”!

Porridge is made by boiling crushed oats in water, milk or both.

It’s quite similar to “okayu” (rice porridge) we eat in Japan.

By itself, it is not appetising, so some people, especially in Scotland, season it with salt and those who have got a sweet tooth like me, sweeten it with honey or maple syrup.

You can add dried fruits such as raisons or mix in some chopped nuts and seeds to taste.

Also it is quite nice to sprinkle cinnamon powder or cocoa powder on top.

If you cook with other grains such as quinoa, millet, barley or buckwheat, it is even more nutritious!

For vegan, cook the porridge with water and add soymilk before you eat.

All in all, porridge is very versatile and absolutely no trouble to prepare.

For instance, if you use oatmeal, it only takes a couple of minutes to cook it over the hob.

See? Dead easy!

Porridge is quite popular in the UK where I used to live.

Triyoga, a yoga studio I used to practice in London, offers free porridge to yogis after Mysore class (Ashtanga self practice class).

Actually porridge is currently quite fashionable due to the popularity of GI diet, which promotes foods with a low Glycemic Index (a measure of the effect of carbohydrates on blood glucose levels).

Low GI foods tend to be digested slowly, releasing sugar into the bloodstream slowly, so you feel full longer than eating high GI foods such as white bread.

Porridge is also a great source of dietary fiber as well.

For me, porridge is a comfort food like chocolate.

It, no doubt, appears daily on my breakfast menu from now on as the winter seems to have arrived here finally.

I had it for breakfast this morning, of course. Yum!

Ganesha

Ganesha has become well known in Japan recently, thanks to a bestseller novel called “yume wo kanaeru zou” (the elephant-head god that will make your dreams come true) and its dramatization on the telly.

I haven’t read the book or seen the drama yet, but I am very curious about the story as Ganesha has always been my
favourite deity and also this Ganesha, I gather, speaks with my local brogue, Kansai dialect!

I am planning to read the book first to see if I like it :)

Anyhow, I guess many people are aware that Ganesha is a Hindu deity from India due to the popularity of the novel.

Ganesha has an elephant head with one broken tusk, a human body and four arms.

There are many variations on items which he holds in his hands, but the most common pattern is like this; one of his front hands is in abhayamudra that is the gesture of reassurance and protection. He holds modaka (a sweet) that
symbolises the sweetness of the realised inner self in the other front hand.

In his two back hands, he holds an ankusha (elephant goad) that is to prod man to the path of righteousness and truth, and a pasha (noose) that implies that worldly attachments and desires are a noose.

Ganesha is widely revered as the Remover of Obstacles and worshipped by many devotees.

He is said to strike and repel obstacles with ankusha he holds in his hand.

His huge belly signifies the bounty of nature and also that Ganesha swallows the sorrows of the Universe and protects the world.

By the way, each Hindu deity has a particular vehicle and Ganesha’s vehicle is a mouse.

It sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it?

How can that huge bellied body ride on a little mouse?

Well, most of pictures and figurines I’ve seen show a little mouse standing next to Ganesha respectfully.

I have, however, seen the figure of Ganesha actually riding on a gigantic mouse!

Is it only me who think it looks, well, straining the law of species a bit…

Anyhow, there are many mythological anecdotes associated with Ganesha.

I start with a story how Ganesha ended up with an elephant head or the story of his birth.

It goes like this;

To guard her privacy during the bath, Goddess Parvati created a boy from the sandalwood paste that was rubbed off from her body and she infused life into him.

While the boy was guarding the entrance to her bathing chamber, Lord Shiva, Parvati’s husband, returned.

Not
realising that it was his father and the great Lord Shiva, the boy refused Shiva’s entrance.

Enraged Lord Shiva severed the boy’s head and it flew off.

To pacify Parvati’s rage and sorrow over the incident, Lord Shiva instructed his Gana (followers) to bring the head of the first living being they encounter and it was an elephant.

There are many anecdotes related to his broken tusk.

One version is that Sage Vyasa asked Ganesha to scribe down the great epic poem “Mahabharata” while he dictated.

Ganesha
realised the enormity of the task and thought that any ordinary pen would not be adequate to undertake this task.

He thus broke one of his tusks and made a pen out of it.

Another version tells that Parashurama, one of Shiva’s
favourite disciples, came to visit Shiva while he was asleep guarded by Ganesha.

Parashurama and Ganesha broke into a fight and Parashurama hurled his axe into Ganesha and Ganesha, knowing that this axe was given to him by Shiva, received it with all humility upon one of his tusks. The tusk was severed immediately.

These are all interesting stories, but my
favourite version has to be the following;

One day, Ganesha, after having received an enormous amount of sweets (modaka) from his devotees, decided to go for a ride (not on a horse, but on his vehicle – mouse!), thinking it might help the digestion.

It was a magnificent night with full moon.

Suddenly a snake appeared out of nowhere and nearly frightened the mouse to death, causing him to jump and threw Ganesha off to the ground.

Ganesha’s stomach was burst open by the impact and all of the sweets that he had eaten were scattered around him.

Nevertheless, the intelligent Ganesha didn’t lose his cool and he took the snake that had caused the accident and wrapped it around his stomach like a bandage to tend his injury.

The moon saw the whole scene and laughed and that was too much for Ganesha to take.

He lost his cool and breaking off one of his tusks, hurled it against the moon, so ended up with one broken tusk.

What a comical story!

Well, even God is not perfect, it seems.

I don’t know whether it is true that Ganesha can grant your wishes.

There again, we say in Japan that the believer will be saved…

Yoga asana – how many are there?

Do you know how many yoga asanas exist?

The different numbers are quoted depending on scriptures.

However, according to Gherand Samhita, which is one of three notable Hatha Yoga scriptures along with Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Shiva Samhita, there are staggering 84,000,000 seated poses taught by Lord Shiva.

Wow! The mind boggles…

Out of 84,000,000 poses, 84 poses are the best, Gherand Samhita says, and out of 84, 32 poses are considered to be essential and they are described in the scripture.

Originally, yoga asana was practiced for the purpose of Pranayama and to prepare oneself for lengthy meditation.

Bearing in mind this, we can easily understand why these are all seated poses.

Sage Patanjali gives the famous definition of asana in Yoga Sutra that “Asana is a steady, comfortable seated pose” (2.46).

Anyway, back to the numbers of asana, Hatha Yoga Pradipika (written by Swami Swatmarama in the 15tth Century), which is the oldest among the three Hatha Yoga scriptures, there are 84 poses taught by Lord Shiva and of which 15 poses are actually described in the scripture.

4 poses are with particular significance, according to the scripture, which are Siddhasana (Adept’s Pose), Padmasana (Lotus Pose), Simhasana (Lion Pose) and Bhadrasana (Gracious Pose). (1.34)

Out of 4 poses, Siddhasana is the most important pose. (1.38)

Shiva Samhita also states Siddhasana as the most important pose as well as Padmasana.

Incidentally, Hatharatnavali lists up all 84 poses.

When I looked through them, I discovered that there were several poses that I had never heard of.

Among the popular poses such as Trikonasana (Triangle Pose) and Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose), which are often practiced in yoga studios all over the world, there might be some relatively new poses…

Asana might have been evolving along with time.

Yogi Tea

Nowadays chai has become very popular in Japan.

You will find “just add hot water instant chai” and chai teabags readily available at many grocery stores.

I first discovered chai about the same time as I took up yoga.

During my trips in India, I was hooked by it after having tasted the real one.

As most of you know, chai is a milky tea beverage. In India where chai originates, it is normally served in a small cup (either made of glass or metal) already sweetened.

Masala chai is a spiced up version of chai and posh restaurants and tea rooms tend to serve it unsweetened.

I don’t normally take sugar in coffee and tea, however chai is an exception.

I just love masala chai with heaps of jaggery which is a traditional unrefined sugar popular in India.

Last winter I stayed in Mysore which is situated in southern India for a few months and
I found masala chai at The Green Hotel and Shakti House very good!

If you ever visit Mysore, I definitely recommend you try them :)

Anyhow, back to readily available chai on the market, so far I haven’t found the one I really like – all products seem to lack something…

Don’t you find them either too weak or too spicy?

I admit they are very convenient and when you are in a hurry, I guess they are good enough.

However, when you have time, why don’t you make one from scratch?

I can’t remember where I’ve found the recipe below – perhaps from a cookery book, or a magazine / newspaper article.

It might not be to everyone’s taste, but why don’t you try it to see if you like it?

280ml (10 fl oz) water

3 cloves

4 green cardamom pods, crushed

4 black peppercorns

2-in (5 cm) length cinnamon

Cover and boil the ingredients together for 10-15 minutes.

Add a pinch of black tea, and let it sit for a minute or two.

Then add 110ml (4 fl oz) milk and return to the boil.

Immediately remove from the heat, strain, and serve with honey to taste.
