Finger Knitting

So far my love affair with knitting shows no sign of waning :)

I attended a finger knitting lesson at Avril Shinsaibashi last Sunday.

Yes, they run beginner and intermediate knitting lessons pretty frequently.

Their lessons are open to everyone and even a complete beginner is welcome.

Great, huh?

These lessons offer an excellent opportunity to learn how to knit for someone like me who can’t quite work out the art of knitting by looking at books and YouTube videos.

Anyway, the lesson was informative as well as fun.

I really had a fantastic time :)

The teaching staff was very friendly and incredibly patient.

I botched up many times during the lesson, but no matter how many times I asked for help, the help was given without any huff.

At the end of two hours lesson, I managed to complete a beautiful scarf, all done by fingers :)

Finger knitting is brilliant!

A. You don't need any tools (obviously).

B. You can knit more loosely than using knitting needles, and this makes the texture light and soft.

C. It's sort of eco and organic!

Now, I think I am ready to graduate from the scarf knitting stage and feel confident to move on to something else.

So my next project will be a snood!

Snood is a tubular neck scarf (oops, another scarf!), and it was all the rage this winter in Japan.

I'll be making a shopping trip to Avril Shinsaibashi soon to get my hands on the gorgeous yarns again.

You know what?

Choosing yarns is my most
favourite part of the whole knitting project :)

I can't wait!

Dolce far Niente

It means "the sweetness of doing nothing".

I love this little Italian phrase.

It sounds utterly delicious, doesn't it?

Like scrumptious desserts that just melt in the mouth.

I heard this phrase in the film version of "Eat Pray Love" that was released in Japan last autumn.

"Eat Pray Love" is a best-selling memoir by American author Elizabeth Gilbert.

In this hugely popular memoir, the author chronicled her year long trip to Italy, India and Indonesia where she sought and found pleasure, spirituality and balance respectively.

I love the memoir, by the way.

There are loads of great quotes in the memoir (well, there are some over the top ones, too) that I’ve earmarked for my little notebook of interesting quotes :)

Incidentally, "dolce far niente" doesn't appear in the original memoir.

"Bel far niente", the beauty of doing nothing, is the one used by the author there.

Anyway, what do you think my "dolce far niente" moment would be?

Well, I'd say, I'd be sitting in a cafe facing a busy street.

I'd be watching people hurrying to and fro in the street while taking great pleasure in the knowledge that I wouldn’t have to be anywhere or do anything other than have a leisurely coffee and watch the outside world.

Well, in another scenario, I'd be in a little fishing village somewhere in Greek Islands.

I'd be having lunch in a little run down taverna, enjoying my Greek salad and calamari with a glass of vino.

The sun would be shining and there'd be nice sea breeze ruffling a sun parasol above my head.

I wouldn't have a care in the world.

Or I could be in a deserted beach somewhere watching the sunset.

There'd be nothing between the sky, the ocean and myself.

There’d be no past, no future, just the present moment spreading in front of me.

Well, all of the above scenarios remind me of one of my
favourite songs by John Lennon, “Watching the Wheels”.

I’m just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round

I really love them roll

No longer riding on the merry-go-round

I just had to let it go

The sweetness of doing nothing.

The sweetness of letting it go.

Imagine how liberating it would be…

Hand knitted Scarf!

I've done it!

Well, stiches are not quite even, but who cares!?

I certainly don't care about the minor (?) imperfection :)

All in all, it's not too bad for a first knitting project.

I just love the yarns I've chosen for the scarf.

They are from my
favourite yarn maker, Avril.

The colours are amazing, aren't they?

Anyway, it has turned out to be a quick & easy project.

Start to finish, all I needed was a couple of hours and no more!

I used jumbo knitting needles that were 20mm in size for the scarf.

I think this has helped to speed up the process a lot.

Also, the scarf was knitted in garter stitch that was considered one of the easiest stitches we could do.

This has helped, too.

I find knitting very therapeutic and relaxing.

It has a meditative quality as the mind switches off while your hands work to make a stitch after stitch.

Indeed, I think that knitting is as good as yoga for those who are stressed up.

Now my first project is over, I'm itching to knit another, eh, scarf :)

Well, it’s still cold out there, and a warm scarf is always handy, huh?

Fabulous Yarns!

Everyone in the female side of my family is clever with their hands.

My grandmother, for instance, ran popular knitting classes with many students when she was alive.

My mother used to be a dressmaker and she also taught sewing to, again, many students.

My sister is another one who is good at both sewing and knitting.

Then to top it all, my sister-in-law is forever making beautiful handcrafted bags, scarves and such.

And how about me?

Well, sadly, I'm an exception among my talented family.

I can neither sew nor knit well.

However, I seem to have inherited a weeny gene for creativeness as I tend to develop an urge to make something with my hands every now and then.

Many years ago I was hooked by needlework for a while.

I was really into it and made loads of tapestries - some of them were framed and the others were made into cushions.

My interest in this area, however, died down after two years or so.

Next came my papier-mâché period.

Unfortunately it didn't last long, either.

After that, I was into bead crafts and made loads of jewelries for the period of, again, two years or so.

I still make the odd necklace or two when my mood takes me, but it doesn't happen often.

Actually, for a quite long time I'd had no desire to take up anything creative until I saw a gorgeous hand-knitted scarf that was my sister-in-law's creation at the end of last year.

OMG! The yarns she used were just amazing!

She used a combination of three yarns to make out one thicker yarn and they were all different in colours and textures.

These beautiful yarns were from a yarn maker called Avril.

And you know what?

I just had to knit my own scarf using these fabulous yarns!!!

According to my sister-in-law, it took her only two hours to knit the entire scarf and the knitting technique, she said, was very simple.

She even offered to teach me how to knit :)

Well, she is a seasoned knitter whereas I'm a novice...

Still, if the method is simple, even I should be able to knit a scarf, right?

So with huge excitement, I visited Daimaru Department store in Shinsaibashi where Avril yarns were stocked the other day.

AND what waiting for me there was a knitter's paradise - exquisite yarns everywhere that all seemed to be begging us to knit them.

It was hard to choose yarns as they were all incredibly beautiful and there were so many of them.

Anyway, after much deliberation, I picked out four yarns and armed with my purchase, I went home happy bunny.

Eagerly anticipated day for my knitting lesson finally came.

I couldn't quite contain my excitement - in my head, I was an expert knitter already and started to thinking about what I would knit next.

You know, my problem is that I always try to run before I can walk.

Unfortunately, the lesson didn't proceed according to my plan...

I just couldn't get it!!!

I must be a class A idiot!!!

Also a combination of four yarns wasn't easy to handle for a beginner, either.

Do you know what happen to my beautiful yarns?

Well, my sister-in-law took pity in me in the end.

She took them home and knitted a scarf for me - bless her heart!

This will not be the end of my knitting career, though.

I'm still in love with fabulous Avril yarns.

I will master knitting and that is to be my New Year's resolution for 2011!

Watch this space :)

Make Time

Don't you sometimes wish you had more time?

So that you could do the stuff you always wanted to do?

If the answer is yes, you are not the only one.

I often hear people grumble about a lack of time.

Even my 82 years old mother complains how busy she is all the time.

God knows why she is so busy...

A mystery, that is...

Anyway, it seems to me that everyone's life is filled to the brim with whatever they need to do every day.

Studying, working, looking after family, taking care of housework, etc...

"To do list" is a lengthy one.

There're so many things that need to be done and so little time.

"I just don't have time!", you might moan.

But hang on a minute.

Is it really true?

Well, in my case, some of the time I could say I am genuinely busy.

On the other hand, I can't deny that I use lack of time as an excuse, too.

Ultimately, it is up to us to make time, right?

Instead of vegetating in front of the telly or surfing on the net aimlessly like me, unless that is what you really want to do, you can use the time to do, say, read the latest bestseller you've always wanted to read or take up yoga for instance.

The key is to
prioritise your day.

If you review how you normally spend time, most of us should be able to free up an hour or two per week easily.

So instead of wasting time, we have a choice to spend time more effectively and to do the stuff we've always wanted :)

Time waits for no one.

Don't let precious gift of time slip away!
