Cool Yoga Mat Bags

As your yoga practice becomes a regular fixture in your diary, some of you might start thinking about getting your own yoga mat.

Well, some of my students have done exactly that.

They brought their new shining yoga mats to classes last week.

Actually, bringing your mat to classes is not unusual.

What impressed me, however, was that they made their own yoga mat bags!

How cool is that!?

Well done, ladies!

Their bags look absolutely gorgeous!

Don't you agree?

Neti

I hate cold weather and can't wait the arrival of spring.

Unfortunately, the warmer weather has its unwelcome side effect, namely tree pollen!

Like millions of hay fever suffers, I'm really dreading the season of misery and discomfort.

In Japan, most of hay fever sufferers have allergy to cedar and/or cypress pollen.

Come February, just as soon as weather turns a little bit warmer, cedar starts releasing pollens.

This year, the Met Office has already predicted that pollen count would be TEN times higher than the average.

A legacy of the exceptionally hot summer we had last year, apparently.

Ugh...

Unless I were to be miraculously cured of the affliction in the next week or so, I would need to brace myself for the onslaught of the nasty symptoms to come.

It is vital that I do everything I can to lessen my misery.

So what could I do apart from taking the conventional medicines?

Then I remembered about "neti" - a yogic nasal cleansing technique.

Neti is a part of shatkarma or six yogic systems of body cleansing techniques.

These techniques are depicted in Hatha Yoga Pradipika, one of the foremost texts on Hatha Yoga, dating from about the 16th century.

Besides neti, the rest of shatkarma are dhauti (internal cleansing, mainly the cleaning of the digestive tract), basti (yogic enema), trataka (concentrated gazing), nauli (abdominal massaging) and kapalbhati (a breathing technique for frontal brain cleansing).

If you are interested in these cleansing techniques, do read Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

It is quite, eh, riveting to find out how they are done.

Anyway, back to neti, there are two types of nasal cleansing techniques and, here, I'm talking about "jala neti" - nasal cleansing with water.

For this technique, you need a neti pot (I bought mine online).

Fill the pot with lukewarm, slightly salted water, and insert its spout into one nostril.

Tilt your head so that the water flows out the other nostril.

Keep breathing through your mouth during the procedure.

Repeat on the other side, and make sure to dry the nose afterwards by rapid breathing.

You might find that the technique is a bit tricky at first.

But once you get the hang of it, this is a great way to clear nasal passage and very beneficial for hay fever sufferers.

For precaution, if you have any ENT related illnesses, please consult with your doctor before you try the technique.

DIY Bolsters

I’m a huge advocate for using props.

Props are great inventions for which we should thank Mr BKS Iyengar :)

What is so great about them?

Well, they give you extra inches and support to your body which help you to obtain the correct alignment in yoga asanas.

But above all, they give you “ease” so that you can achieve the correct alignment without straining yourself.

There are many types of props such as belts, blocks, bricks, blankets, sandbags and, my favourite, bolsters.

Unfortunately, these props are not cheap in Japan and their costs are quite often 2 to 3 times higher than in Europe and the States.

I guess once the props gain more popularity in Japan, the prices might come down?

I hope so…

Anyhow, to make at least one of the props affordable, daredemoyoga in collaboration with Murata Bag is offering “DIY Bolsters”!

You might be wondering what they are…

Basically, we are selling a set of bolster covers that consist of one outer cover and one inner cover.

The idea is that you use whatever materials you have at home such as cotton from old futons, rolled up old blankets or towels to stuff in the inner cover to make your own bolster and put it in the outer cover!

Great idea, huh?

If you use any old and unwanted materials lying around at home for the stuffing inside, it’s ecological as well :)

These covers are made of 100% cotton with a full zip that makes stuffing easy work!

As it comes with both inner and outer covers, you can remove and wash the outer cover with ease whenever necessary.

By the way, for the outer cover, you can choose from 3 beautiful colours (purple, royal purple and cassis)!

And best of all, the price for each set is only 3,500 yen plus p & p.

Not bad, huh?

(Triyoga)

(The Urban Retreat)

(The Path of Grace)

The Path of Grace

I’ve just come back from London after having spent Christmas and the New Year there.

London
is my second home (or first?) and I love so many things about this exciting city.

I especially love its yoga scene, as London is full of fantastic yoga centres.

One such centre, and my favourite, is Triyoga where I used to practice regularly.

I make a point of practicing there as much as I can during my visits to London.

Needless to say, I’ve made several trips to the yoga centre during this visit and enjoyed all the classes I attended tremendously :)

I especially relished an experience I had during the Urban Retreat.

The Urban Retreat is Triyoga’s annual end of the year event and it offers a retreat environment to the participants while still in London.

During the 4 day event, the participants spent from the morning to the evening at the yoga centre immersing themselves with yoga, kirtan and meditation, or simply reflecting on their thoughts and experiences.

Each year, the retreat has a theme and this year’s theme was “The Path of Grace”.

I was lucky to join the retreat for one day, which was unfortunately all my schedule permitted.

During the first part of the retreat on the day I attended, we discussed about “gratefulness”.

The participants, I gathered, were given homework on the previous day to write down a list of what or who made them grateful.

While I was listening to their discussion, I started to compose a list of my own.

First of all, I was grateful to my teachers, Anna and Joey for letting me join the retreat for the day.

I felt grateful for my husband, Bob, for his unwavering support for whatever I decided to do.

I was grateful to my darling Wolfie, a little yorkie, for his loyalty, devotion and love of the purest kind.

I was grateful to my parents for everything they had done for me.

I was grateful to all my teachers for their knowledge, guidance and compassion.

I was grateful to all my students for their loyalty and enthusiasm for yoga.

The list was endless.

When we do an exercise like this, we realise how much we depend on others for who we are and what we do.

Of course, life does not always turn out the way we wish, however if we look around with eyes wide open, there is still plenty to be grateful about :)

As my list went on and on, I was filled with warmth and started feeling really blessed.

Why don’t you try to make your own list?

And take a first step to the path of grace.
